It is commonly known as 'spicy shankarpali', but we call it 'ronti' in konkani( kerala GSB). Ronti is very easy to make and i use wheat flour which is a more healthy option than refined flour. I make it nice n spicy as my family loves it that way. You can adjust the chilly powder to suit your taste.

Ingredients:

Wheat flour - 1 cup

Sesame seeds - 2 tsp

Hot oil- 2 sp + oil for frying

red chillypowder - 2 tsp

Pinch of asafoetida(hing)

Method:

Mix the wheat flour with the sesame seeds, chilly pwd, hing and 2 tsp hot oil. Add water as required to make a dough. Keep the dough aside for 15 minutes. Make small balls of the dough and roll out into thin chapati. Cut into diamond shape. Heat oil for frying and deep fry the ronti till done. Cool and store in airtight containers.

Traditional Konkani Sweet for Diwali.

Let me begin by posting something sweet. For Diwali we always make 'pohvu kallaylo'. i.e. beaten rice with jaggery & other items. All of us participate in making this sweet. before marriage when I was in my parents house, it used to be a really fun affair as each of us would be assigned a job. Then finally all of us would be sitting around with our hands in the Phovu(avalakki/poha). My kids now join in while my hubby & me make the sweet.

Ingredients:-

Poha(thin variety) -500gms

Jaggery- 500 gms

Coconut grated- 1

Chana dal- 50 gms

Moong dal- 50 gms

Til- 25 gms

Ghee- 5 tbsps

Cardamom- few

Sugar- to garnish

Method:-

Dry roast the chana, moong dal & til separately.

Add the grated coconut to the poha & mix it well. Meanwhile, make a one string syrup with the jaggery, adding little water. Put the dals over the poha & pour the jaggery syrup over this. Mix the whole thing well. Then add the ghee & mix again. Sprinkle sugar & cardamom pwd over it and serve.

Diwali Wishes!

Wishing u all a very happy Diwali!!
